Jan Robert Leegte - Walled Garden

ARTIST Jan Robert Leegte (1973) is a Dutch artist based in Amsterdam. He is one of the first in the Netherlands to create art through and for the internet, starting in the 1990s. Today, his work spans both online formats like websites and their offline translations, such as prints, sculptures, and projections. A recurring theme in his practice is the sculptural materiality of digital interfaces, including design elements like cursors and menu bars, which were crafted to give users the illusion of pressing physical buttons.

WORK Walled Garden is a generative digital artwork that presents a lush, wind-swept virtual garden enclosed within high walls, visible only through 150 unique, fixed viewports—each tied to an individual NFT. Drawing on themes of perspective, ownership, and mediated nature, the work transforms the act of collecting into a shared spatial experience.

The garden itself shifts through day and night cycles, its foliage in constant motion, yet remains physically untouchable—inviting viewers to contemplate the boundaries between digital space and ecological presence, and between collective memory and individual perception.

COLLECTION With his exploration of value in the digital realm, playing with physical things becoming virtual and vice versa, the work of Jan Robert would be a great addition to the Copernicus Collection.
