Travis LeRoy - The Revenant - Bite the Dust

ARTIST Travis LeRoy Southworth has been shaping digital art since the late '90s, long before “Post-Internet” was a buzzword. His work examines computerized labor, self-perception and the blurred edges of identity in a world of algorithms and image manipulation.

A NYFA Fellow and former CERN resident, Travis was also one of the first artists on SuperRare (2018). Since 2019, he's integrated machine learning into his practice, continuing to push the boundaries of tech, art and what it means to see and be seen.

WORK The Revenant is a series of 476 animated portraits that explore identity, digital resilience and the persistent life of bitcoin, despite its countless “deaths” in media headlines. A tribute to what's written off, but never gone.

Each work reclaims fragments from bitcoin’s obituaries, reinterpreting phrases like “Why Bitcoin Can’t Be a Currency” into titles like “Be A Currency.” These portraits aren’t just visual, they’re philosophical echoes of value, perception and comeback stories.

Rendered as black-and-white bitmap GIFs, the works nod to both early internet aesthetics and the binary language of blockchain. The Revenant isn’t just art. It’s a cycle: fade, return, evolve. 476 times dead. 476 times reborn.

COLLECTION Created with A.I.-driven synthetic photography, the figures emerge from swirling mist: faceless, fluid, anonymous. They mirror the shifting, ungraspable nature of digital identity and the fleeting attention economies of crypto culture. In reflecting on our changing human experience in the exponential age, The Revenant - Bite the Dust is a very well fitting addition to the Copernicus Collection.
